WS East Elementary Promotes Peace on Pavement

Colorful drawings covered the sidewalks at West Seneca East Elementary on Wednesday, Sept. 21 for the school’s first “Chalk for Peace” event.

Students at the school decorated the pavement with chalk illustrations in celebration of World Peace Day. This annual holiday dedicated to peace has been observed since 1981.

The many drawings ranged from peace symbols, doves, hearts, handprints, planet Earth, renderings of children and written messages encouraging compassion and hope – all making a statement for peace.

The art work followed a viewing of the video “Peace One Day,” which depicts the story behind the founding of Peace Day.

Though this was the first year East Elementary took part in an official celebration of the day, staff and students are already talking about plans for Sept. 21, 2011, including possibly donating snack money to raise funds for a charitable cause.
