Real Men Don't Use Barrels

Real Men Don't Use Barrels

Everyone is familiar with the many daredevils who sought glory making attempts to go over Niagara Falls in barrels.  Buffalo, not to be outdone, had its own daredevils going over the largest things we had to offer, GRAIN ELEVATORS!

The Watson Elevator was for many years the highest and most prominent among the large grain storehouses on the Buffalo waterfront. It was a unique elevator situated on an island the same size as the structure itself giving the illusion of the elevator floating on the water. The marine leg tower, about 110 ft. high was the point from which daring men, ambitious to win notoriety, essayed to leap or dive into the Buffalo River.

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) is again waging a fight against federal flood maps, this time taking aim at the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) flood zone in the City of Buffalo’s Old First Ward.

“Again we see federal flood zone designations not based in science or reason placing unfair burdens on local homeowners and discouraging investment in the Old First Ward,” said Congressman Higgins, a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, which has jurisdiction over FEMA.  “We stand with local residents and business owners and approach this fight like we do others, by providing good, solid facts that support our argument.”

Congressman Higgins sent a letter to the FEMA Regional Administrator requesting a revision of the Flood Insurance Rate Map for the Buffalo neighborhood.

Congressman Higgins Suggests Ways to Stay Connected

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) provided the following resources that allow local residents to stay connected to his efforts locally and in Washington, DC.  In addition, the Congressman provided other useful links for federal and local information.

“With the expanded use of online tools, social media and mobile technology, a central part of serving the people of Western New York is staying connected to where residents find the latest information and being involved in those conversations,” said Congressman Higgins.

Higgins, a new member of the Committee on Foreign Relations, recently returned from a trip to the Middle East, with a stop originally scheduled in Egypt.  He added, “It’s no secret that social media has a growing influence in major world events such as those seen in Egypt and Iran.  These tools are giving people around the world a new voice and providing a vehicle for communication that can lead to a greater social good.”
