The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) will host the 6th annual Canada/U.S. Border Immigration Fall Conference in Buffalo, N.Y., on Oct. 17, and among this year’s presenters will be Berardi Immigration Law’s Managing Partner, Rosanna Berardi. The AILA conference gives leading immigration lawyers and other professionals the opportunity to discuss and analyze substantive and practical issues in Canadian and U.S. border immigration.

East Aurora resident Steven Helmicki, president of Primordial Strength Inc., a top-level private gym located in Elma, has launched www.anticoncussion.com and developed two USA-manufactured neck training machines and two field manuals that teach progressive, safe neck training. Helmicki has also developed a coaching certification program to reduce the number of concussions among athletes.

VALLEY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION TO HOLD “CHINESE AUCTION” ON OCT. 15th

The Valley Community Association will hold their annual “Chinese Auction” Basket Raffle on Wednesday, October 15th, 2014 at the Valley Community Center, located at 93 Leddy Street, near the junction of South Park Avenue and Elk Street in downtown Buffalo. 

Doors will open at 2pm for viewing and entering chances.  The drawings will start promptly at 7pm.  There is no admission charge and one sheet of twenty-five chances is just $5 and five sheets (125 chances) are $20.   You do not need to be present to win.

There will be over 150 prizes up for raffle including gift certificates to many local restaurants and stores, theme baskets, arts and crafts, sports memorabilia, holiday decorations, and much more!!  In addition the kitchen will open at 5pm and will be serving refreshments and food.

Daemen Convocation Welcomes New Students, Opens Academic Year

With the fall semester getting underway Sept. 2, Daemen College hosted a variety of campus activities for returning and incoming first-year students, including Fall Convocation to welcome more than 550 new students to the college community and to celebrate the start of the new academic year.

“The most important ability you will acquire in your college years is the ability to think critically and analytically about the world,” Daemen President Gary A. Olson said in his address to students at the all-campus event on Sept. 4. “As college-educated individuals, you will have the ability and the responsibility to always exercise your critical thinking skills.

Catholic Charities of Buffalo Appoints Two Directors

Catholic Charities of Buffalo has appointed two new members to its leadership team. Meichle Latham has been named Director of School Based Services and Maria Picone has been named Director of the Family and Community Services Department, formerly known as the Metropolitan District Service Department.

Dennis Walczyk, Catholic Charities Chief Executive Officer, said, “We are pleased to promote Maria and Meichle to these leadership positions, and look forward to the expertise, passion, and energy they will bring to their new and increased responsibilities.”

As Director of School Based Services, Latham is responsible for overseeing the organization’s services currently delivered to Catholic, public and charter schools in Erie and Niagara counties. She also will establish and maintain connections with educational partners and work to expand services to schools not being served.

BUFFALO RIVER FEST PARK HOSTS  “HALFWAY TO ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY” ON SEPTEMBER 5TH

On Friday, September 5th, 2014, the Valley Community Association will host their fourth annual “Halfway To St. Patrick’s Day Party” at Buffalo River Fest Park, located at 249 Ohio Street, Buffalo, New York.  The event will run from 7pm to 11pm and will feature the local Irish band “The Left Overs”.  

“The Left Overs” have established a following in Buffalo and throughout Western New York for over a decade. With music ranging from popular drinking songs to the historical and poignant rebel songs of Irish past, “The Left Overs” offer a large variety of tunes and ballads.  The band was founded by Jerry Shea and Pat Gerken, on the premise that good music will always bring people together. “The Left Overs” are Jerry Shea, Pat Gerken, Elizabeth Shea, Ryan Young, Dave Pruski, Greg Kent, and Tim Ellis. 

The Resource Training Center, S.E.R.V. Niagara Announce Scholarship Recipients

 

Two local veterans have been awarded scholarships through the Gary L. Valeri Scholarship Program by The Resource Training Center of Amherst and S.E.R.V. Niagara. The scholarship, named after the former husband of S.E.R.V. Niagara’s founder who lost his long battle with addiction, will help train veterans to work as Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselors (CASAC).
