Timon Prepares for Manhattan Cup Title Game | News
BUFFALO, N.Y.-Timon's scrappy team will play an outstanding Canisius squad for the third time this season on Wednesday for the Manhattan Cup Championship.
Canisius won the previous two meetings this season, 64-59 and 78-42 respectively. Canisius is 21-4 overall and 12-0 in Monsignor Martin play, and they're playing for a three-peat in the Manhattan Cup. Bishop Timon is at full strength for the first time this season, all players academically eligible and recovered from injuries, Timon has a great outlook on this game against Canisius.
Timon has come on as of late, beating St. Joe's in the Manhattan Cup Semifinals 60-58 on Sunday to advance to the Championship game, and now are on a 4-game winning streak, their longest of the season. Timon has improved their record to 14-13 and jumped into a hot-streak. "We've had some injuries, some academic issues, we're really starting to put it together now" said Timon Head Coach Joe Mihalics, Senior # 25 Demone Harris added " We work hard, we try to do all the little things, we're not overly talented, we do what we can to stay in games". Senior # 15 Ryan Dougherty said " I think were resilient, that's the word that describes us, it was obvious the other night at Joe's".
Dougherty came back to play his first game of the season in the win against St. Joe's on Monday after a ACL injury in the beginning of football season. Dougherty, recovered from his injury, has given Timon the spark of energy they have been missing. " Dougherty, he's a tough player and a tough kid, he is a great person off the court and to have him back is a great lift said Senior # 4 Manny Welch. "It's a great feeling, this is what I was rehabbing for, to make it back to this point. It's just awesome to be back" said Doherty. Demone Harris said " It means alot to have Ryan back, he tore his ACL in football, and we all were banged up pretty bad. It's very inspirational to know that he can come back and play with us even though he may be risking his future to come play".
Timon is not taking this Canisius team lightly and are preparing their best for this match-up, they do not want to see Canisius beat them for a third time this season, and win their third straight Manhattan Cup. Canisius may very well be the top team in Western New York and possibly in New York State. "They do the little things, they do everything right, and Kyle over there does a great job with them and has a great group of kids" said Timon Coach Mihalics, "Wier is the player of the year and he is a great player. Those guys know and understand how to play the game, they all work well together".
Demone Harris said " We haven't beat Canisius in the past couple years, its very upsetting because you know you're right there at the end of the game, and were just a few possessions away, we just have to make the right decisions and come together and beat them". All the Timon players are excited to play for a Manhattan Cup, they haven't made it to the championship game since 2004, and haven't won since 2001. " It's really exciting, after we won the game against Joe's, after the overwhelming joy and emotion, then knowing that we have a chance to play for the Manhattan Cup it's very exciting because last year we came up short against Canisius. Playing this year in the championship means alot and I'm very excited for it".
Canisius and Timon will tip off on Wednesday at the Canisius College Koessler Center at 7PM. You can see the game live here on wny.highschoolsports.net with Stu Boyar handling the play by play and Dickk Gallagher doing the color commentary.
