Elmwood Village Winter Market at Buffalo State to Return on December 3

The Elmwood Village Winter Market at Buffalo State, an indoor version of the popular Elmwood Village Farmers Market, will return to Buckham Hall on the campus of SUNY Buffalo State, 1300 Elmwood Ave., on Saturday, Dec. 3. The market will run from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays through mid April 2017.

In addition to hosting nearly 20 quality vendors, entertainment will be offered from approximately 10 to 11:30 a.m., and one community group will be invited to host an informational table each week. One group or organization from Buffalo State will also host a weekly informational table, and the market will be equipped to accept EBT customers as well.

Dog Ears to Host Tim Shannon for Book-signing and Irish History Presentation

Local author Tim Shannon will visit Dog Ears Bookstore & Café from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, for a presentation on Buffalo’s Irish history and book-signing event. The nonprofit bookstore is located at 688 Abbott Road in Buffalo.

Shannon’s PowerPoint presentation uses historic photos to illustrate the history behind his “Da’s Shillelagh Trilogy.” The three book in the trilogy include “Da’s Shillelagh,” “Da’s Legacy” and the newly released “Da’s American Family.”

Topics featured in the presentation include the role of the Irish in the War of 1812, the Erie Canal, Great Seiche of 1844, Canal District, Civil War, the Fenians and more.

Erie, Pennsylvania’s most popular artisan market, Christmas in the Country Erie, returns to the Bayfront Convention Center (1 Sassafras Pier, Erie) Nov. 19 and 20. The holiday market welcomes 150 artisans and artists from the Erie area and across the country. The event features unique handcrafted creations including home décor, gourmet foods, trendsetting jewelry, hand-poured candles, children’s clothing, stylish pottery, original wall art, gifts for pets and holiday gift items galore.

Author Rosanne Higgins to Visit Dog Ears Bookstore in December

Rosanne L. Higgins, author of “A Lifetime Again,” book four of her Orphans and Inmates series, will host a book-signing event from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Dog Ears Bookstore & Café, 688 Abbott Road, South Buffalo.

Higgins grew up in Buffalo. Her experiences traveling in both the United States and in Europe as a child resulted in a love of history and cultural diversity from an early age. She entered graduate school in 1990 as an anthropology student and studied the relationship between biology and poverty during the 19th century. Her main interest was the institutionalized poor. In 1998 she earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University at Buffalo.

Celebrate the Christmas Season with Special Events at Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village

From celebrating a Victorian Christmas to dining with Santa to enjoying a holiday tea with loved ones, Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village invites you to participate in their exciting events planned for the month of December.

Enjoy a menu full of Victorian Christmas recipes at the second annual “Taste of Christmas Past” from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. The evening’s program includes:
• Music by Dan Wilke, organ grinder, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
• 45-minute guided lantern tours of the village with one of BNHV’s costumed villagers (includes grounds and exterior of building) at 6:15 and 7:15 p.m.
• Music by the Hutchinson Family Revival from 7 to 9 p.m.
• Live auction at 8 p.m.
• Tree lighting ceremony and caroling on the historic bandstand at 8:15 p.m.
• Remaining auctions and raffles after tree lighting ceremony

Explore Buffalo and Palace Theatre to Offer Lockport Tour of Homes

The Historic Palace Theatre in Lockport and Explore Buffalo are teaming up again to offer a great tour of homes to kick off the holiday season! Participants will enjoy touring 10 historic locations in the City of Lockport from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19.

Starting at the Kenan Center Arena, guests will pick up their tour book containing histories of the buildings and a map with the locations of the homes. Carolers from the Palace Theatre’s production of Scrooge will be at the homes, adding to the holiday atmosphere. 

This tour is self-guided from home to home, with docents in each home. You can visit the homes at your own pace and in whatever order you choose. A map of home locations will be provided at the tour’s starting location inside the Kenan Center Arena (behind the Kenan Arts Center), 433 Locust St.

Expanded GDI Hacks Powered by AT&T to Benefit Local Women & Minority Owned Businesses & Nonprofits

The Buffalo Chapter of Girl Develop It (GDI Buffalo) will once again host the region’s only all-women hackathon, GDI Hacks powered by AT&T, and has expanded it based on the popularity of last year’s event. The event, which will take place on Saturday, November 12th, 2016 from 8 am - 9 pm at the DIG Innovation Center, will be the second all-women hackathon in the region’s history and will expand the number of participants to 70 and double the number of businesses and nonprofits that can take part to 10. During the hackathon, teams of web developers, innovators, technologists, designers and marketing experts will be challenged to provide several area women and minority owned businesses or nonprofits with new or updated websites that they otherwise could not afford or have the expertise to do on their own.
