Historical Society Puts the Spotlight on Niagara Square

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society, in co-sponsorship with the Louise Bethune Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians, is pleased to announce an evening program featuring Jennifer Walkowski, architectural historian.

Walkowski will share her insight and research about the history of Niagara Square and Buffalo City Hall in an illustrated lecture, "The Keystone of the Arch of the Plan: Edward H. Bennett's Buffalo of Tomorrow and John J. Wade's Buffalo City Hall." The talk will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13 at the History Museum.

Walkowski, acting president and founding member of the Louise Bethune Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians, is the leading authority on the history and architecture of Buffalo City Hall.

Holiday Dinner Dance Featuring Jack Civiletto & The Pyramid Band to Benefit Pet Connection

Tickets are now available for a Holiday Concert/Dinner Dance featuring Jack Civiletto & The Pyramid Band that will take place from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, December 4, at the Hearthstone Manor, 333 Dick Road, Depew. Proceeds from the event will benefit Pet Connection Programs Inc., a special care shelter for dogs and cats located in Marilla.

Catholic Education Dinner Helps Provide Grants, Programs for Students

The annual Making a Difference dinner highlights the leaders of Catholic education in the Diocese of Buffalo and reinforces the need for the continuation of support for programs such as the foundation’s needs-based tuition assistance program. The dinner will be held on Jan. 27, 2011, at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in Buffalo.

“Good leaders have a strong sense of self-awareness and strong values,” said Chris Lowney, main speaker for the 2011 Making a Difference dinner. “They believe in helping people develop their own self-awareness, which has always been important in Catholic schools.”

Baseball Academy Adds Coaches, Offering Special Lesson Package and Hosting Tryouts

Attention baseball and softball players! The Baseball Academy of WNY, located at New Era Park, 4817 Lake Ave., Blasdell, has added two new instructors for its fall and winter schedule. The additions include Joe Mamott, a former professional pitcher with the Boston Red Sox, and Charlie Karstedt, a four-year player at the University at Buffalo.

The Academy is also offering a lesson package special on all regularly priced 10 packs. Anyone purchasing a 10-pack of private lessons by October 31 will be given one free lesson. Eleven lessons for the price of 10 — a $32 value!
