The current Miss Buffalo, Lonna McCary,  is gearing up to compete for Miss New York next week in Staten Island.  Contestants in the Miss New York pageant will compete in interview, swimsuit, evening gown, talent and on-stage question portions of competiton.

"It's been a really exciting experience to represent the Queen City throughout the year. I've met so many wonderful supporters throughout the year and I'm privileged to have the opportunity to bring the Miss New York crown home," said 21-year-old McCary.

With an impressive resume including volunteer work in Africa and acceptance into college at 16-years-old, beauty isn't all that meets the eye with McCary. She is currently pursuing a Master's Degree from Hilbert College and used to work for the U.S. Secret Service.  "Most people think the contestants that compete in pageants are dumb. The Miss America program is different, we have a rigerous training and interview process," McCary noted.

Throughout her year as Miss Buffalo, McCary volunteered at local youth groups and schools speaking about her community service issue, Teen Dating Violence Awareness and raised money for the Children's Miracle Network.

Months of interview, modeling, and fitness preparation in addition to volunteer work have all led up to the state pageant, a preliminary to Miss America. McCary will sing "Preacher's Son" at the state pageant in hopes of being the first Miss Buffalo in 15 years to win the Miss New York title.

"My goal as Miss New York is two-fold. Through education and personal appearances to implement real change in young people’s lives, I will be a champion of teen domestic violence awareness and remove the taboo associated with this issue."

McCary, a former Buffalo Bills cheerleader, won the title of Miss Buffalo infront of thousands of people last September at the National Buffalo Wing Festival.  The Miss New York Scholarship Pageant will take place June 13-15 in Staten Island and will feature 22 local contestants from around the state.
