The WNY Land Conservancy Seeks New Members

Our members are the heart and soul of the Western New York Land Conservancy (www.wnylc.org). Their dedication to protecting our region's most important streams, forests, meadows, and farms has made our many achievements possible. With their support, we have protected more than 6,000 acres of spectacular land since 1991. Yet there is much more work to be done to save the region's transformative places. By becoming a new member now, you will help ensure our success.

The Land Conservancy is a regional, not-for-profit land trust that works with families and communities to permanently protect our region's irreplaceable natural areas and farmland for future generations to enjoy. Our five dedicated staff work at an office on the Kenneglenn Nature Preserve in Wales. We are supported by more than 600 members who contribute time, energy, ideas and financial resources to our work.

The last year has been one of the most exciting and productive times in our history. We have embarked on our most ambitious project ever — creating the Stella Niagara Preserve on the Niagara River in Lewiston. With 29-acres and over a quarter-mile of shoreline, it is the largest privately owned, undeveloped tract of land along the entire length of the Niagara River. With gorgeous views of the turquoise river, important wildlife habitat and astounding cultural history, protecting this land is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. When complete, the preserve will be open to the public with walking trails, fishing access and a place to put a kayak in the water. We have already raised $2.6 million of the $3.2 million needed to purchase the property from its owners, the Sisters of St. Francis, and create the preserve.

In addition to this, we helped protect the Mill Road Scenic Overlook in Aurora at the end of 2013 after a multi-year campaign to save this stunning 60-acre property. We began 2014 by protecting the 90-acre Meyer Farm in the fertile Eden Valley, our second protected farm in Eden, and are now working to protect our third farm. This year we also hosted several nature hikes, won two awards for our work, and presented findings from our year-long study about the Niagara Escarpment. All of this work is improving our region’s already high quality of life.

Help us continue this essential work by donating on our website at www.wnylc.org. You can also send a check to the Western New York Land Conservancy at P.O. Box 471, East Aurora, N.Y. 14052. The minimum membership donation is $35, but larger donations are needed. Don’t hesitate to call us at (716) 687-1225 or email us at info@wnylc.org if you have any questions.

By becoming a member of the Western New York Land Conservancy, you will help leave a legacy that will last for generations!
