West Seneca Marching Band Hosts 5th Annual Music in Motion Competition

The West Seneca West Band Boosters will host the largest high school field band show in Western New York this season, when the fifth annual Music in Motion competition comes to West Seneca East Senior on Sunday, Oct. 7.

With 10 area high school marching bands competing, this will also be the largest Music in Motion event yet. Sponsored by the West Seneca West Band Boosters, the show will include performances by the three-time state champion West Seneca Marching Band, as well as marching bands from Hornell, Wellsville, Pioneer, LeRoy, Lancaster and Orchard Park.

Under the direction of John Blickwedehl, the West Seneca Marching Band’s 2012 performance is titled “Medieval Kingdom.”

A marching band’s performance is a precise combination of music and visual performance, judged on musicianship, field accuracy, ensemble quality and musical and visual effect – within a strict time limit.

The West Seneca Marching features more than 60 members, from both East and West high schools and middle schools.  This year, the band was promoted to a larger division, the Large School 2 Division of the New York State Field Band Conference, due to its success and growth in recent years.

The band’s success can be credited to cross-town collaboration and a lot of hard work. Students rehearse at least three times per week, and on some weekends, perform at a Friday night football game, Saturday competition and Sunday parade. Many of these performances include travel.

In addition to the excitement of the musical and visual performances, Music in Motion is also known for its concession stand menu. This year’s refreshments will include such favorites as Buffalo chicken bites, Buffalo chicken sandwiches, taco in a bag and pizza.

Gates will open at 3 p.m. with the show beginning at 4 p.m. Admission is $6 at the door or $5 presale. All proceeds benefit the West Seneca West Band Boosters and marching band activities. An awards ceremony will be held at approximately 6 p.m.  West Seneca East High School is located at 4760 Seneca St., West Seneca.
