WANTED: Friendly History Buffs (or Those Willing to Learn)

The Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society is seeking docent tour guides. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about history and sharing their knowledge—all are invited to attend the upcoming FREE orientation and training sessions this fall, on October 15, November 12 and December 3; they are all Saturdays, and each sessions runs from noon to 3:00 p.m.

The first session focuses on the Historical Society current anchor exhibit, “Fact, Fiction and Spectacle: The Trial Red Jacket”; our newly refurbished Oishei Pioneer Life Gallery; and our fascinating Native American collection.

The second session will cover the 150-year history of the museum, plus our Street of Shops and Neighbors exhibits.

The final session will be training for the Pan American Exposition exhibit at the Resource Center, the Historical Society’s storage and exhibit facility on Forest Avenue.

Each session will provide guided tours of exhibits by museum education staff, plus special presenters there to share in-depth and behind-the-scenes information.

Prospective docent tour guides will receive an information packet including the Docent Manual, exhibit tour scripts, a list of publications available in our research library, should you care to do extended reading, and other exhibit-specific and general suggested reading.

Volunteers and tour guides may be college students or older; we do ask that those interested are flexible in their schedules. We have an ongoing need for weekday tour guides. To register or for more information, contact Tara Lyons, Program Manager, at 873-9644 x311 or bechsedu@bechs.org, or visit www.buffalohistory.org.
