Carl Paladino Votes in South Buffalo

SOUTH BUFFALO, NY - GOP candidate for Governor Carl Paladino cast his vote Tuesday morning at Salem Lutheran Church in South Buffalo.

After voting, Paladino became emotional over a family tragedy.

In March 2009, Paladino's 29-year-old son was killed in a car accident in Grand Island.

Paladino said Tuesday that he had an angel on his side.

Women & Children’s Hospital Hosts Skateboard Safety Day at Xtreme Wheels Skate Park

A Skateboard Safety day hosted by The Regional Level I Pediatric Trauma Center for Western New York at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, in partnership with Kiwanis, will take place at Xtreme Wheels Skate Park on September 18 at 11 am.

To help avert future head injuries while skateboarding, head injury prevention education and demonstration activities will be presented by Dawn Melancon, R.N., Trauma Coordinator at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, Kathleen Duke and Child Life Specialist Sue Mirabella. Head injury prevention programs will occur at the skate park from 11 am until 12:30 pm. Activities will include:

  • Education station, head injury prevention (jello brain, ‘egg drop’ demo)
  • Education promoting helmet use

Children participating will receive a skateboarding helmet and gear: including knee pads, wrist guards and also elbow guards on a first come first serve basis.

Dr. Michael Caty Appointed to Executive Committee of Surgical Section for Academy of Pediatrics

Michael G. Caty, M.D., M.M.M., Surgeon-in-Chief, Director of Pediatric Surgical Services, Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, and Professor of Surgery & Pediatrics, University at Buffalo School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, was recently elected to the Executive Committee of the Surgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

After a six year term on the committee, Dr. Caty will become Chairman of the Surgical Section.

Dr. Caty is Board Certified in Pediatric and General Surgery. His clinical interests include neonatal surgery, thoracic surgery, intestinal motility disorders, pediatric surgical oncology, pediatric laparoscopy and thoracoscopy. His research interests are concentrated on the pathophysiology of intestinal ischemia, reperfusion and surgical innovation.

Buffalo Youth Advantage Basketball Coaches to Receive SUNY Training

Russ Kingsbury, director of the Buffalo Youth Advantage Basketball program, has scheduled a coaching certification course with the SUNY Youth Sports Institute for Thursday, September 16th.  The class will be held at the Expressway Assembly of God Church located at 260 Eggert Road in Buffalo.  The presentation is set to begin at 6:00pm and is expected to last 2.5 hours.  Tim Donovan, Director and Founder of the SUNY Youth Sports Institute, will be the Instructor teaching Thursday evening’s course.

March of Dimes Celebrates Annual Signature Chefs Auction

The March of Dimes, Western New York Division presents the 2010 Signature Chefs Auction, “Feathers & Flair, A March of Dimes Monte Carlo Affair” on Friday, October 8 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. Western New York’s finest chefs will offer their signature dishes coupled with wine tastings from regional wineries and accompanied by an array of unique live and silent auction items and entertainment. Everyone is invited to attend the evening, which raises money and awareness to save babies from prematurity, birth defects and infant mortality.

This year’s event promises to be an elegant night with some of the best restaurants in town. Featured dishes will be prepared by Alex’s Place, Blue Buffalo, Chef’s Restaurant, Fiamma Steak House, Harry’s Harbour Place Grille, Koi, La Scala, My Tomato Pie, Protocol Restaurant and Rich Renaissance Catering. Wine selections will be offered by Merritt Estate Winery.
